2018 Stang to have a 10 Speed Auto

It appears earlier reports that an updated 2018 Ford Mustang will launch with a 10-speed automatic transmission option are true, if this latest leak is any indication.

Following reports last year that the Mustang will swap its current six-speed auto option for a 10-cog self-shifter, the transmission has appeared on Microcat, the online database that Ford dealers use to look up parts for its vehicles.

In a report by Mustang6g, the 10-speed automatic – codenamed 10R80 – now appears in the dropdown menu under ‘Transmission’ for the Mustang.

While the new shifter isn’t attached to any model year in the database, it’s a safe bet that it will be offered with the forthcoming update.

The 10-speed auto is the product of a collaboration between Ford and General Motors (GM) to produce transmissions for their next-generation vehicles, designed for both front- and rear-wheel drive applications.

The Ford F-150 Raptor that was unveiled at last year’s Detroit motor show was one of the first models from either company to offer the 10-speeder, coupled to a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6.

Chevrolet has also released its first model to be equipped with the new auto – the 2017 Camaro ZL1 – which pairs the new transmission with a 477kW/868Nm 6.2-litre supercharged V8. Given the historic rivalry between the Camaro and the Mustang, their shared transmission design makes for an interesting evolution.

The extra cogs with the new auto should improve fuel efficiency, along with being able to handle high power and torque figures – as showcased by the Camaro ZL1.

However, there is still no official confirmation as to whether an 2018 Mustang update will include the new self-shifter, but the database leak is a strong clue as to what’s to come for Ford’s iconic pony car.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for more updates on the refreshed Ford Mustang as they come to hand.
