    Mustang model trivia.

Ok, i've often wondered this but never really had it explained.

In the 60's and early 70's there's been many different versions of the Mustang, all with a "purpose".

    But what was that purpose?

i.e in Falcon terms Falcon GT was the high performance Falcon, GTHO the race Homologation special, XR series the affordable performance etc.

But for Mustang? The reason i ask is we are hearing about new iterations of the FM Mustang on the horizon, but what do they stand for?

Historically there's been these significant models, with my take:

    GT Mustang: Entry Performance

GT 350 Mustang: Homologation race package

GT 500 Mustang: Not sure, high performance road car?

Cobra Jet: Edit: Drag racing package.

    Mach 1: no idea

Boss 302: Homologation circuit race package

    Boss 429: Homologation NASCAR package?

Have i missed any? What's your take?
My Falcon family heritage: XY V8 Falcon 500, XYGT, XBGT, XC 351 GS, XD 4.1 Spack, EF wagon, AU Wagon, AU2 Wagon, AU2 XR8, BA XR8, BF XR8, FG XR6, Lucky last: Sprint 8. Oh wait, AU3 XLS Marlin Ute!

Ok, so in todays terms, if Ford did a FM Cobra Jet you'd expect it to be focused on straight line performance not ride and handling?

    Yep, because they still do

Back in the day the CJ went head to head with all the Chrysler bad boy Hemis including the bad bastard with the cross ram manifold. Then Ford brought the Cammer to the party and everyone cried foul.

There is also the 351 Mach 1 Mustangs to add to the list. Fairly certain there was also a Boss 429 in there somewhere as well.

So what was the theme of the Mach 1?? or was it simply a packaging special rather than specific purpose?

Who knows, up until 1974 Ford had so much shit going on it wasn't funny, looking at the Mach 1 it seems to have been a factory performance special to go up against the likes of the Camaro Z28 and the Charger in the new car market, being available with an auto reinforces this IMO
