Govt shelves plans to loosed import laws.

    Snip:

Plans to loosen laws preventing ‘parallel’ vehicle imports have largely been shelved as part of the federal government’s re-jigged Road Vehicle Standards Bill, designed to take effect in 2019.

As you may recall, representatives from the Turnbull Government early last year flagged changes to the extant Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1987, to allow parallel ‘grey’ importation of near-new cars from 2018.

The news quite obviously sparked fury and derision from key players from all Australian new vehicle importers, and their peak body, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) – though not all industry stakeholders were opposed.

“After further detailed work on implementation arrangements, the Turnbull Government has decided not to proceed with one element of changes proposed earlier, which would have allowed personal importation of new motor vehicles from the United Kingdom and Japan,” said today’s government statement.

i dont see what could have been wrong with a person (as opposed to a company) importing their own vehicle for personal use. Only a few people are going to have the financial resources and motivation to do it anyway, so "the sky is falling" fears of the industry are unfounded. As long as the car is made to be ADR compliant, what's the problem

Im concerned this will be followed by even more bespoke ADR's separating us even further from Mainstream RHD markets.

Yes that would defy comprehension given that they were supposed to protect the local car making industry - now we dont have one anymore, so no need for bespoke ADR's.

It's a govt full of morons and subservient pansies.
The political scene here is a joke.
There's no clear direction in anything they do, every single policy is solely geared toward them remaining in power. What is actually best for the country is way down the list of priorities.

And it doesn't really matter what side of the political spectrum you support, they're all cut from the same cloth.

It's not just us though, it seems to be a malaise effecting Western countries, or at the very least, the anglo-sphere english speaking ones, look at Trump's America

Everything the Government does these day has so many procedures and red tape
    Nothing is simple
When they try to simply things, such as the ADR's they actually make it worse
Now we can blame politicians, but in reality isn't govt like the old English Comedy "Yes Minister"
Where the politicians are so guided by the bureaucrats?
