    Several pieces of the 2018 Supercars silly season hinge on Prodrive Racing Australia’s current moves to buy a fourth Racing Entitlements Contract.

    Team co-owner Rod Nash has confirmed to Supercars.com that the squad is keen to purchase a fourth REC, but insists a deal to do so is yet to be struck.

    The team currently owns the #5, #6 and #55 RECs, while the #56 is owned by Jason Bright, moving to the squad at the start of 2017 to replace Super Black Racing as its fourth car.

    As previously reported, Prodrive is working through details of an agreement with Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport for the latter to run customer equipment next year.

    The discussions have included the option of LDM scaling back to a single car, allowing Prodrive to purchase the team’s second REC to run Richie Stanaway as its fourth entry.

    Potentially standing in the way of such a deal is Bright, who has told Supercars.com that his agreement with Prodrive includes the team continuing to run his REC in 2018.

    Bright is keen to remain a REC owner regardless of his driving future and says he has no intentions of moving it to another team.

    “There is an agreement in place for them [Prodrive] to use my license, so unless that is terminated, then it will be here for them to use,” he told Supercars.com.

    “I have an agreement to drive here either as a full-timer or a co-driver in the years to come as well, but as to what that is, probably in the next few weeks we’ll make that decision.”

    If a deal is struck by Prodrive to purchase the LDM REC and Bright’s REC is cut loose from the team, where it would be redeployed is currently unclear.

    Among the possibilities is that it could open the door for Dunlop Super2 team Matt Stone Racing to enter the series with its young gun Todd Hazelwood.

    The team’s backer Jason Gomersall declared earlier this year his intention to facilitate a move to the main game for MSR and Hazelwood, pending the availability of a REC.

    Other Dunlop Super2 stars Garry Jacobson and Jack Le Brocq have meanwhile been linked to the seat at a single-car LDM, with current driver Alex Rullo no certainty to return.

    Jacobson is currently in his second year with Prodrive in Super2 and, like Stanaway, made a strong case for a promotion with impressive stints in the recent PIRTEK Enduro Cup.

    Placing Stanaway in its main team and Jacobson at a customer outfit appears an ideal scenario for Prodrive, which already has Chaz Mostert, Cameron Waters and Mark Winterbottom locked into its three lead entries.

    Nash says that REC discussions are being had with both LDM and Bright, adding that there remains much to play out in the coming weeks.

    “We collectively currently only own three RECs [#5 and #6 as PRA and #55 as Rod Nash Racing] and our modelling is to go to owning four,” Nash confirmed.

    “That hasn’t quite come off in the last year or two, we would have liked to have done that, but it’s like musical chairs at this time of year, the discussion is going on.

    “Whether it happens this year or next, we’re certainly out there having discussions with other REC holders making it known that we’d like to purchase a fourth.

    “It’s just the business model. We are running the fourth car ourselves, it’s totally in-house, we deal directly with the sponsor and the driver is signed up with PRA [Prodrive Racing Australia].

    “We are fully running the fourth REC and it makes sense to own it.”

    Dumbrell meanwhile added that his deal with Prodrive is close, but admits that the REC scenario – and how many cars his team will run – remains a work-in-progress.

    “We’re still in discussions with Prodrive. It’s quite technical and it takes time to nut out all the pieces you do and don’t want to include,” he told Supercars.com.

    “Obviously they’ve still got some bits to work out at their end with RECs and bits and pieces, but our intention is to proceed and run PRA equipment.

    “We’re 99 percent there on everything, so it’s about nutting out the finer bits and pieces, as well as working out how we’re going to do it with one or two cars.”

    Elsewhere, the unfolding Supercars silly season has seen Anton De Pasquale emerge as the front-runner for the second seat at Erebus, replacing Dale Wood.

    Those with uncertain futures include the likes of James Moffat and Will Davison, with respective teams Garry Rogers Motorsport and Tekno yet to declare their plans.

    GRM protégé James Golding is thought a likely successor to Moffat at GRM, while Le Brocq is one of a number of drivers to have been linked with the Tekno seat.

    Will Davison is considering all of his options including opportunities overseas if he is unable to secure a full-time Supercars drive for 2018.
    The two-time Bathurst 1000 winner has emerged as a key piece in the Supercars silly season as the grid for next year’s campaign begins to take shape.
    Davison currently faces an uncertain future as he reaches the end of a two-year contract at Gold Coast-based Triple Eight customer squad Tekno Autosports.
    With full-time drive options dwindling, the 35-year-old’s priority is to remain in the series, although he has confirmed to Speedcafe.com that a move away from the championship is being considered as an alternative.
    Tekno Autosports has been tight-lipped on its plans for next season although the team has completed this season with only part-time sponsorship.
    Several drivers armed with sponsorship budgets have been linked to a drive at the team.
    Speedcafe.com understands Davison’s next move will become clearer within the next two weeks.
    The Gold Coast-based driver has a strong network overseas having spent his formative years racing in British Formula Renault and Formula 3 and also has links to America through his cousin James Davison.
    “Hopefully soon I will know (my plans for next year),” Davison told Speedcafe.com.
    “Of course I’m looking at other opportunities. I’m definitely looking outside of the category as well.
    “There is some pretty exciting things I could do next year but this (Supercars) would be my priority.
    “I’ve never hidden the fact that I would like to do some overseas racing and I may well have more time to explore that next year, but hopefully not.”
    The 19-time Supercars race winner could still remain at Tekno depending on the structure of the one-car team in 2018.
    He has also been linked to a move back to Erebus Motorsport, where he drove from 2014-2015, although Dunlop Super2 Series driver Anton De Pasquale is the favourite to replace Dale Wood.
    Garry Rogers Motorsport is yet to confirm its plans for next season however James Golding has been tipped to take over the seat currently held by James Moffat.
    Nissan Motorsport is yet to officially announced its line-up along with Prodrive Racing Australia and Brad Jones Racing, although the latter is expected to maintain its current roster.
    Meanwhile, the new one car Lucas Dumbrell/Phil Munday run operation is expected to announce its plans at Newcastle next month.

    Reading that from Bright seems to suggest he might not be full time next year if PRA don’t secure their own REC.

    It’s looking like Richie will possibly take the forth seat at PRA either under a rec PRA own or taking Jason’s seat and driving under Jason’s REC.

    I think I read similar somewhere else the other week just as that HSE2.

    Another article I saw briefly was that Warburton is moving on from memory.

    i didnt read into that that beigh wouldnt drive,, but i did take that he has no intention of leaving the PRA stable

    Van Gisbergen extends Red Bull HRT contract

    Shane van Gisbergen will remain with the Red Bull Holden Racing Team until at least the end of 2019 after extending his contract with the squad.

    The Kiwi moved from Tekno Autosports to Triple Eight’s Red Bull outfit last season on a three-year deal that has now been lengthened by another 12 months.

    It commits the reigning champion through the team’s transition to V6 turbo power, which is due to occur full-time in 2019.

    The deal has been announced on the eve of van Gisbergen’s home event in Auckland, New Zealand, where last year he won the Jason Richards Trophy for the first time.

    “I’m really happy to be staying with the Red Bull Holden Racing Team for another year,” said van Gisbergen.

    “The first two seasons have been great, especially with the championship win last year.

    “I definitely feel I’ve come on a lot over the last couple of years and Triple Eight is a great place to be.

    “I’ve got an awesome team around me and I’m enjoying racing more than ever, so it made sense to keep that going.

    “With the Next-Gen Commodore coming next year and the V6 twin-turbo engine in 2019, it’s a really exciting time to be part of the factory Holden team.”

    2017 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship

    Van Gisbergen is expected to continue combining his Supercars efforts with various international GT races, which could include events in both the USA and Europe next season.

    Triple Eight boss Roland Dane now has van Gisbergen and Craig Lowndes committed for 2018 and '19, while Jamie Whincup’s current deal runs out at the end of next year.

    Dane expanded his squad from two cars to three last year in order to retain Lowndes while slotting van Gisbergen into the main Red Bull outfit.

    “Shane has developed enormously since joining Triple Eight at the beginning of 2016 and we’re looking forward to seeing what we will achieve together in the years to come,” said Dane.

    “We never had a moment of hesitation in extending our contract with Shane, he has proved his ability both on and off the track and he settled in to the Triple Eight way of life very quickly.”

    Van Gisbergen enters this weekend’s ITM Auckland SuperSprint fifth in the standings, 189 points behind leader Whincup with 600 still up for grabs across the final two events.

    On Inside Supercars tonight, during the news segment Greg Rust talked about Richie's future and said that he's "very happy at Prodrive" and that they can't seeing him going anywhere else next year.

    On the rec thing.

    To me it looks clear that some sort of deal has been struck with lucus as a customer. Selling your rec under those conditions is probably more favourable and desirable.

    What PRA do with that rec comes down to Jason.

    As he points out, the deal could be terminated. I would like to think my team wouldn’t do that and an agreement could be reached.

    Jason to me in his words seems to be opening the door to stepping back.

    Unless there is something it it for Jason to get Richie driving his rec in the PRA garage I think Andrew is right and Bright will just swap garages and share a boom with the customer car at lucus pit bay.

    Both customer cars in the one pit.

    Failing that and this would be Jason playing hard ball, contact to run under 56 might see a compromise where Richie drives for Jason while Jason drives the 4th Pra rec out of the lucus boom.

    This would only happen if there were contractural consideration like sponsors or finding a work around because someone is being silly.

    LDM looking to be Prodrive ‘satellite’ team in 2018

    Lucas Dumbrell believes his eponymous Supercars squad could emerge into a Prodrive satellite team next year as the operation’s shake up for 2018 continues.

    The Melbourne squad is in the process of a transformation for next season courtesy of a buy-in by Australian businessman Phil Munday, which will include a rebrand, new equipment and a move to new premises.

    As previously reported, the squad is planning to run a single car Supercars outfit aided by a customer arrangement with Prodrive, which is edging closer to completion.

    The deal will see the squad switch from ageing Holden Commodores to a Prodrive Falcon FGX, which could be piloted by a driver linked to the Ford squad.

    Dumbrell says progress on the new look team, expected to revealed in the lead up to the Coates Hire Newcastle 500, is gathering momentum, and is excited at the potential a link with Prodrive will provide.

    “Phil (Munday) and I have managed to nail down quite a lot and Prodrive have been good to dedicate time to us to discuss bits and pieces,” Dumbrell told Speedcafe.com.

    “We are getting closer to nailing down, confirming and signing agreements. I think we both have a true understanding of how it is going to work.

    “I’m really happy and excited by what they have put forward.

    “We will have an equal car to any of their Falcons and it will truly be like a satellite operation.

    “We are not going to be two or three steps behind the eight ball with the development train.”

    The identity of the team’s 2018 recruit is yet to be secured although Dumbrell says talks are being held with Prodrive linked drivers.

    It is believed 2016 Dunlop Super2 Series driver Garry Jacobson and Prodrive’s former second tier racer Jack Le Brocq are among candidates linked to the seat.

    Current Prodrive co-driver Richie Stanaway has also been touted as a possibility having emerged as an option to replace Alex Rullo for the remainder of the season following his exit, which was confirmed yesterday.

    “There are a couple of guys (we have been speaking to),” added Dumbrell.

    “We have chatted to Prodrive about who they have got in the stable and there are a couple guys on the cards.

    “But we are more focussed on running down the technical side of things to make sure we have got the best of what is available.”

    Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport will field Commodores for Jack Perkins and Aaren Russell at this weekend’s ITM Auckland Super Sprint.

    Perkins will replace Rullo in the #62 after the team confirmed a termination of the agreement with the Perth teenager.
