Nissan to join v8 supercar!

well thats a bit from left field. v8supercar said they have a major announcement at 11am tomorrow but i guess this just stole their thunder if its legit.

whats the deal with COTF. does the manufacturer have to use their own engine within certain criteria? or can they choose to run an existing engine from one of the many existing engine builders?

what top hat/shape will nissan use? a Z car shape? should mix things up a bit.

the article also seems to hint there could be more than just nissan joining. chrysler has already been rumoured. interesting times.

They can use any engine they like, eg Ford/Chev or anything else.

Yep, under COTF they can use any V8 engine they like... just as long as it produces EXACTLY the same power and torque as the other engines in the series, in a car with exactly the same weight as the other cars in the series with identical weight distribution and aerodynamic efficiency......

yeah, i just can't remember the criteria for COTF. technically it doesn't have to be any brand. they just have to build an engine within the specs given. i guess most builders start with a ford or gm block though.

Norm - so the parity will be the power/torque figures, not the actual capacity? is cam still in block, or OHC? i'm sure the specs are out there somewhere.

My understanding is any V8 engine just as long as the power, torque and RPM are set and within predetermined secs... "effectively" they're inacting a control engine....
Car wheelbase dimensions are set too... so a Z car would look like a Limo!!!
edit, CoTF is 4 door sedans.

COTF creates ZERO incentive to venture outside of the 2 current powerplants, id imagine Nissan will run the Chev/HMS engine with Nissan rocker covers..!.

so could they run a 4.5L (for arguments sake) with 7500 limit and meeting power and torque requirements?

would a lower capacity engine, making the same power and torque, be more efficient? also, is it just the peak numbers that have to be the same.

They could... but the fuel burn is monitored too.... LOL

The power and torque graphs have to overlay.. so no, no advantage allowed. They want it a TEAM/DRIVER series... with badges of coarse!!!

infinity m56. 5.6l v8, rwd. could be a contender.

obviously the driveline specs don't mean anything in this context. pic mainly for car shape/body suggestions.

Norm - are there any 'free' areas on the engine development side of things. seems the powers that be have most things covered to stop people finding too much of an advantage somewhere.

Rob, ANY technical advantage that rises from a new player will be swiftly sanctioned and knobbled... they have made it very clear they want the vehicles identical for performance, much like we have now. Total Parity.

Can anyone imagine the Hissy Fit Holden Motorsport would throw if a new player, let alone Ford had some kind of advantage???!!! They'd threaten to boycott races.. and we all know Holden are a major sponsor of the series..
