Hi guy's I am looking into a new tune for my AUII XR8, at the moment it has a Unichip that has been in it for the last 10 yrs, I am now looking into something new or atleast give it a good tune.
The only option's I have found are the SCT Xcal3 for around $1500 and the QH (quaterhorse) for around $500-$1300 fully equiped.
has anyone looked into either tunes or know much about them etc ?.
I use Sniper with the software. Does what the SCT stuff does too. The support for speed density ie MAP based cars like the I6 don't get much support on that forum. The local support has IMO been poor to non existant.
Time over I would go the TI Performance J3 chips which are locally made and have software plus backup and are cheap!
My previous XR8 had a SCT Xcal2 and my TS50 has an SCT Xcal3. I dont have any issues with them.
My XR8 went from a Unichip to the SCT unit. I only changed because of installing the cam and the unichip cant control the idle speed etc. Biggest difference in the change was the trottle position and the power seemed to be more linerar. I have also been told that a unichip can loose its program if the battery is disconnected for a long period, and eventually the factory ecu will relearn its settings around the confusion of the unichip.
I have read on the other forum about the QH and it seems like a good unit, i would consider this if you have knowledge of tuning and are prepared to do it yourself. This is something i would like to do, but honestly i dont have the time and would rather pay the extra and have a mechanic tune my car and worry about the issues rather than spend everyweekend trying to get the car to run properly.
yep Tim my view as well, let the expert do their job, I have no interest or time but others yep if your into it good on you.
As Tim I have the xcal3 - the experts say this and that I just say how it feels from the bum o meter and fuel economy.
All good to me just make sure you use a "good" tuner thats the key.
Thank's fella's, that is my thought aswell, I like the idea of the QH but I really don't want to have to tune it every time I get in it or fine tune it if you know what I mean, I am past that, I just want a strong reliable econimical cruiser..... that is why the SCT Xcal 3 appeal's to me more.
The next question is who..Herrod's or Bluepower.. I have heard conflicting stories on one shop and what not and alot of people say Chris at BP knows his stuff but I have never delt with them.
Where are you located ?
Look my opinion having watched,heard around the traps - if I was unhappy with Autotech/Spiro here in Sydney I'd seriously consider getting down to Melb to BP, have heard enough good points about them as much as Autotech consistantly.
Autotech get alot of major rebuilds from Interstate as probably does BP but I'm sure some Vic guys here can vouch for BP far better than me having not experienced his work personally.
I am in Bendigo central Vic, I just got of the phone to Chris at Blue power he seem's to be a very honest person and tell it how it is, which I like, and I have also heard many stories that he is the one to go to when a good tune is considered.
I know BP have a good rep in terms of Kenne Bell and Boss engines. I think they have done a few turbos as well. I dont know what they ar elink on windsors though. I have also been told that Herrod has a new tuner now and he is supposed to be highly regarded.

I can vouch for Autotech, Spiro has tuned my TS50 here in Tas. He was aligned with my previous mechanic when he was alive and also worked on the tune that is in the car now from sydney. He was sent all the data logging and tune files and edited them and Rodney just had to fine tune with the car.
