Well, what sort of car for starters? Are any warning lights coming on when this happens?
My EL Falcon was also doing this, in D when the car had been driven for a few kilometers, if you approached an intersection and went to stop, the car would go to stall, it would shudder and shake in 2nd gear, drop to 500 RPM then rev up to 2000 and smash into 1st gear. It wouldn't do it when the car was cold though, would drive perfectly normal.
So I converted it to manual.
No one could help me figure out what was causing it, so when the dash had to come out to do a heater core, the auto came out too and never went back in.
Still slowly working on it to get it back on the road.
Some people did mention a faulty power steering switch could cause it but it didn't fix the problem in my case.
It's a 2000 AU wagon
