Downsizings the way it's all headed, importantly this will open up more oportunities for Ford in the fleet sector.

I have to admit that when I first heard of this idea I fell on the floor singing "Oh lord save me a Prius" I remain sceptical of the real world benefit over the six when asked to performer identical tasks but I am looking forward to the introduction of this model. It is the right thing to try and will be critical to saving Falcon. I want this to work with all my heart just don't expect me to be buying one. I will stick to the V8 thanks!!.

Not that I am trying to be a smart ass or trying to take the micky out of you Ian, but isnt the power output of this ecoboost motor similar to the output of your AU XR8 I know the FG wieghs a lot more than the AU, but its scarey the way power figures have grown in a little over 10 years
I really hope this turns the fortunes of the Falcon, I think it deserves it, the FG is truely a underated car
I was a sceptic originally too, but now admit I would like to try one out

Being realistic here, the thing is in my mind you have to produce the same amount of energy to the crank to move a 1700kg car from 0-60kph in the same time irrespective of engine type, the only benefit in real world use will come from either lighter right food or somehow the ecoboost engine is more efficient at converting fuel to kinetic energy than the I6. Less rotating mass is a help, beyond that im not sure how the real world economy will fare... Just Look at how the S/C 5.0 V i6T compare for usage when driven the same.. near on identical consumption.

Hey, my N/A i6 FG gets 13.1l/100k's driven normally.....

In any event the marketing advantage alone will help no doubt.

i can understand that we would only want the performance models, it's only natural. but i also see this as way to show to the mums and dads, that seek something eco, that falcon's for them too.

Agree completely, its the perception that will make it popular!

What a great looking car that is. White definitely the new sexy.

I agree Andrew but the nature of turbo it's still reactive. I am open minded and the first chance I get I will rent one a write a review here. Will they be released in time for clipsal? I can rent one while in SA :)

I think it will be more than perception. I think there is potential for real substance but I am very interested to see and hear how our local hero stacks up against the global Ford hero.

i think Norm misinterpreted what i meant when i said perception. i should have said image as that's more accurate.

there's quite a difference in power delivery between this, and say something like a peaky Sidi 3.0 v6 where you need to wring it's neck if you feel the need to shift quickly (i was driving a 3.0 once and the Garmin reacted by asking if i wanted to switch to pedestrian mode).

the ecoboost's flat torque curve, which starts at low revs, will mean it has the same feel as the muscly barra, no need for wringing anything.

this translates to the driver being less reliant on it's top end like you would with the 3.0 v6, consequently due to this better torque delivery you're not prone to exploring the upper revs, where more fuel is consumed.

the proof to this is in one of the acceleration tests where a few passengers were added, the sprint to 100 didn't take much less time. in fact, with a car full of passengers the time recorded was quicker than that of an empty ve 3.0.

eb2.0 has the twist of a diesel down low, but unlike a diesel it will keep making power all the way to 6000rpm.

Spot on Dave, they're exactly my thoughts. Added to that petrol's cheaper. The times you were referring to were 7.3 with driver and one passenger, and 7.9 with an extra two guys on board. I can't wait to drive one back to back with the six.
