iPod compatibility - 2011 FG XR6

Hi everyone,

I'm new here having bought a 2011 FG XR6 Turbo a couple of weeks ago. Having come from owning JDM performance cars for the last 18 years, the FG is a huge change for me. Loving the car so far, although have a couple of questions about the iPod integration for which I'm struggling to find answers. I've been Googling unsuccessfully for a week, and have searched several forums for more information, also with no luck.

The iPod integration cable is installed in the car, but when I plug an Apple device into the cable, there is no change in the ICC display (it's the old or lower version ICC, not the colour version), and I cannot find "iPod" as an option when flicking the mode button on the steering wheel. Should the option be visible in the ICC even if there is no iPod/Apple device plugged in?

I've tried using both my iPhone 6 with a 30pin > lightning adapter, and I've tried an old iPod Touch. If I have music playing on the old iPod Touch when I plug it in, it goes silent (can see via the screen that the music continues playing), so I assume the iPod is at least detecting the plug. I'm trying to find out which models of iPod were compatible with the car when it was first released - at least that way I can buy an old second hand one or something, and just leave it in the car.

I've found plenty of info about downloading firmware updates for the ICC version that comes with the USB plug directly into the dash, but cannot find much info at all about the older/lower version ICC updates, so presume it has to go to Ford if I want it updated (if it's even possible to update).

I REALLY don't want to resort to using the aux input or CDs, as one of my main reasons for upgrading to the FG was to gain functionality such as is provided by the steering wheel and ICC options in the car.

Just to be clear. You select aux on the head unit and iPod doesn't come up?

Yes, that is correct. When I hit the Mode button to select Aux, it shows up correctly and I can play music via the Aux-in jack. When I hit Mode again to cycle past Aux (to where iPod option should be according to the user's manual), the iPod option doesn't show up at all - it goes back to radio again.

Cycling through the modes goes something like:
Radio (FM1)
Radio (FM2)
Radio (AM)
CD player
Aux
<----------------Should-be-iPod-here-but-its-missing
Radio (FM1)

ipod touch and iphone are pretty close. can you get an old ipod nano or classic from a mate to try.

i had a similar issue and found i had to buy a new nano with the lightening adapter whcih you all ready have. you need to test on a lower ipod first would be my recommendation.

my touch had an issue with the adapter i think and thats because stupid apple have changed the software at some point with 3rd and 4th gen touches.

When the FG was released many people had problems with the iPod not connecting - it turned out that it was iPods that were running obsolete firmware not the ICC.

Is your iPod running the latest firmware?

It should still say device not supported on screen.

Maybe somethings come adrift somewhere because you should still have the option.

I have tried updating the iPod to the latest apple iOS that it will run, but it made no difference. I suspected the same (that something is amiss between the cable and the ICC), due to not seeing even a "not supported" error - I suspect the ICC is not detecting the iPod at all. Can you guys please confirm - when you don't have anything plugged into the iPod cable, can you still see the iPod option when flicking through modes in the ICC?

The iPod was borrowed from a colleague at work just for testing, so I'll give it back to him and try a model that came out a bit before the 2011 FG was produced (gen 1 or gen 2 iPod touch should work I think).

Just went and checked on mine and when the iPod is detached it reverts back to aux1 on the screen. When I cycled through the options, it only had fm, am and aux.

When I plug the iPod back in aux1 changes to iPod.

I'm at work so I can't check what happens when I plug something in to the 3.5 jack.

Sounds like you may have a dodgy iPod connection cable or an issue with your iPod. My iPod is an old 4th Gen nano from memory.

This is exactly what I needed, thank you. I'm looking for 4th gen nano's already, hopefully I'll find one that works straight away. If not, I'll check out a replacement Ford cable, and if that doesn't help I'll get the connection to the ICC checked out. Thanks again!

I had to go nano to fix my issue. Once I went to a lightening connector the touch would work.
