Kinda glad some of those weren't made. Though the xa, ea 351 n the gt ho wouldn't of been nice. I think if the xa was made we would have seen the ea n gtho. I'd really like to drive the ea351 reckon it would of been a rocket.
The XA GTHO was a massive shame but the one that sticks out the most for me was the EA 351. They could have been a game changer and something I would love to own even now. The small 5.0 never really cut it for me and I owned a few. Its a shame it only finally got stroked to 347 ci at the end of its life.
By the end of FG I was never expecting to see a GTHO, dispite having the motor to deliver on it. We knew ther rest of the car wasnt up for it and FGX changes wherent enough to overcome the deficiencies. Given this and having the benefit of hindsight I think the FG GT-F was the best approach and solution. Its an outstanding, collectors model and car in its own right rather than being a GTHO that didnt quite live up to its reputation. Im not a massive FG fan dispite owning one, but the GT-F and R-Spec remain models I would love to own, or at least experience one day.
The R5 concept was ahead of its time. I actually could have imagined it being quite popular. An FG Fairlane would have been interesting too if they did a proper job of it unliked the half baked effort that was the G220.
Its just as quoted in the end re GTHO GTF, matter of personal opinion.
RSpec for me a rippa at the time, I made a massive wrong call, I was hoping for a Series11 kind of update and there we were at You Yangs with the crew and soon enough the closure announcement came, I was deflated.
GTF never grabbed me like RSpec I'm sure surprising to most and I even had my name down for one and pulled out.
The EA 351 would have should have, 347 should have come along much earlier.
The R5 was another that should have gone ahead.
How much different to the Holden Crewman would the R5 have been though? The Crewman sucked balls and it was a very similar concept to the R5.
Crewman was just before its time. It wasn't really as bad as history would suggest.
The upright rear seats is certainly the worst of the issues. I almost bought a stolen/recovered one the other day for its motor and box but got beat to it. There certainly not worth much.
I actually liked the Crewmen V8 versions and even the Aventra for what they were.
Sure the back seats were very upright but so are current Dual Cabs for that matter.
The important difference imo comparing GM/crewman to Ford R5 we have always had better riding vehicles.
GM product is always sprung/shocks firmer to our Fords hence why we always experienced a better ride especially on the open roads.
R5 had the raised ride height - it would have been a great option to consider instead of Jap 4x4's for many incl a V8 option/our majestic I6 many Tradies would have opted at the time I feel.
