Diesel AWD driveline shunt, bang, thud......!

My inlaws threw me the keys to their brand new diesel AWD Terri yesterday, I was really looking forward to sampling the diesel engine driveline in these things. I wasn't disappointed with the engine, despite only having 900ks on the odo, it was quite towy and surprisingly quiet, in the vehicle, you'd be hard pressed to pick it was a diesel engine! Very very impressive. Such a shame they didn't offer this motor in the Falcon ute years ago!

Anyway, what did shock me, in an unpleasant kind of way, was the apparent shunt under kick down through the AWD driveline! WTF? It's brand new, top of the line driveline spec, and the thing banged under transmission kick down, just like a worn out cab BA with the four speed!

I've read elsewhere that owners loved the refinement of the 6 speed auto driveline... Um,,, not much refinement in this example.

Ive found the same thing in the fG XR6s I've hired previously, infact, in both of those they couldnt even work out what gear they needed to be in to overtake and negotiate a quick exit from corners.

Is it just me, or are these god like worshipped ZFs over rated? me thinks they are......

If I'm going to get driveline shunt, at least given me a manual box to allow me to drive around it!

The new SZ Terri Diesel does not use the ZF 6spd box, it uses a Ford designed 6spd.

Was this on a rolling kickdown, or from a stop?

I see, thanks for clarifying on Terri trans. So, what about the XR6 trans?

The thumping was on rolling kick down, and I heard it once or twice on decent as the trans swapped down ratios to maintain cruise control speed on steep hills.

Overall, I was very impressed by the diesel engine, just not the driveline which I hoped would be commensurate with the motor.

The XR6 uses the ZF equiped box, it's only the new SZ Terri Diesel that uses the Ford designed 6 spd.

The 6R80 in Territory is a ZF 6HP tranny built under lenience by Ford Nth America.

I have the slow down thump on the F6 Tex, its only started doing it in the last 3k. It goes in for a 30k service soon so will ask about it. Like you mentioned, it shits me.

My xr8 had done close to 140000 Kay's and had zero driveline shunt, somewhat surprising really given what some other fg's I've been in were like.

It surprised hell out of me for a brand new driveline that's for sure. My bet, it's in the diff, doubt its the transmission as such.

Shame, it's these type of things that differentiate the Aussy built Falcador type cars from the imports with some driveline refinement. Having said that, I know how hard it is to engineer out driveline lash, axel tramp, driveline noises and vibrations. I have spent a small fortune trying to achieve just that with my BF, despite completely re-engineering the rear end, it's still got thump and bang. Although a focus on durability has taken priority over refinement in the last couple of years. I have personally found durability to be conflicting with NVH minimisation... durability and refinement, bed fellows do not make.

Cant over-emphasise how impressed I am with that little diesel engine in Terri, so quiet and smooth it genuinely puts some of the Euro smog makers to shame. Compared to a rattly VW or Pug, even the Merc oil burners, the V6 in the Terri is like a ninja. Quiet, refined, but packs a useful punch..
