What features would you expect the 2014 Falcon to have?
From the powetrain point of view we know it's getting the newer ZF, mainly to improve economy, so a lot of calibration is required and that would be a good opportunity to focus on the motor, too. So, I don't expect power upgrade - it appears Ford won't quote beyond 200kW for it's atmo six - but a great improvement in economy and efficiency.
Visually, if they employ the same theme as SZ then it would be great, as that would suit FG's silhouette better than the '04 Tez. It MUST look exceptional as team red have something special lined up for 2014.
Agree, agressive looks are gunna be important for this one as the next Commodore (VF?) looks to be quite a stunner!
I'd like a 6cyl GS also. The same Idea but with the F6 running gear. Unless the guys at FPV don't over do the bodykits again. (just my opinion) I prefer the XR style.
They'll probably do the GT on 20's too, just to keep up.
Better fuel economy with more power and torque.
Would love to see the High Compression 12:1 set up used on petrol applications, enabling more use of 'Atkinson cycle"
variable displacement mode using VCT improving fuel economy and allowing more torque and horsepower with 95 or 98 ULP.
i personally don't think power and torque should be any sort of priority. the driveline at the moment is fine for the 6cyl. if they can eke out another few % in economy then that will be good. maybe they could go down the route commodore took and have the n/a 6 for XR6 only and all others getting ecoboost or ecoLPi as an option. this gives 2 advantages. it gives the XR6 nameplate an advantage again like it used to have in e series, and improves the economy of all other models as they will run the ecoboost. ~170kw will be plenty for a family car. performance should still be similar to AU levels which were ample. want more? buy a xr6 or option the ecoLPi.
next falcon should concentrate on stuff other than driveline tech. the average buyer doesn't know what makes it tick, and quite frankly, i don't think they care. they care about what they see when they open the doors. they care about what they see when they turn the key and the amount of gadgets inside.
i haven't looked inside a FG2 falcon, but last time i looked in a new territory, a lot of the trim looked finished off better, esp round the handbrake etc. not so much build quality (although many say this could be improved) but just the way things are finished.
looks wise, if they head toward the shape of taurus and sz territory, they should be ok. apparently the new VF will look quite 'euro' but if new falcon has similar language to taurus, it should compete well.
Agree - more efficient driveline should translate to better performance anyway - it's packing it with features and style that will count most. As it stands the FG is ahead of the competition in on-road dynamics, ride, comfort, visibility, driveability, smoothness, and so if Ford can somehow focus on other areas to cater for a broader spectrum then that's half the battle won.
It needs to be on par, tech and feature wise, with it's Euro stablemates. People shopping for a car won't be looking for power. They'll be stewing over safety, features, style, economy, price, in no particular order, then power being relegated to the bottom of the priority list right after handling, in most people's cases.
I don't know about having the six exclusive to XR is worthwhile if you can opt for the more powerful LPi in the base models.
