The Coupes
The XA XB XC series had one thing unique in Aussie Ford History - The Coupes.
Models included Falcon 500, GS, GT, the Landau, and of course the last Aussie coupe, the iconic Cobra.
At just 24 I was fortunate enough to own a brand new Cobra in 1978. Clearly the highlight of my car owning life as most owners (people who could afford such a car) were double that age. Furthermore, they were in such demand that the floor price was often $1,000 or more above the RRP. Dealers were "allocated" cars and had no say in what they got. Some dealers got more than one; some got none at all. There was a good waiting list at most dealerships for cars (if one happened to come in). I tried in vain to order one through City Ford (Crown St Sydney) as I thought they would get a number of cars allocated to them. I also figured that since I actually worked for them it might give me a leg up. NO WAY JOSE! They had plenty of standing orders taken during the Sydney Motor Show that they would simply never be able to fill so my chances were zippo.
So how did I manage to get one?
That, as they say, is a story for another day.
