    Best give an expert a ring and ask them, lots of people selling gearboxes say "shifts ok by hand" but you'd expect it to if all is being done is the input shaft is being turned by hand. Some people selling toploaders offer to remove the lid so you can have a look inside, nice idea, but I wouldn't know what to look for aside from obvious broken/chipped parts.

    EDIT: Norm that doesn't look like a factory shifter to me..?

    After doing some research yeah the shifter is an aftermarket type of unknown manufacturer.

    With the shifter I'm just wondering if it is worthwhile to "make your own" out of the various repro parts that are available. Seems all the usual suspects offer all the bits, brand new.
