Volkswagen has been accused of pressuring drivers to accept a software upgrade for vehicles implicated in the global emissions scandal, or face the possibility of no compensation.

My VW is Petrol, but it would be nowhere near a VW dealer for an update anyway. I would be thinking the owners have to wear some of the blame here for being greedy.

The issue in America is that all of this is on VW to effect repairs or buy back the vehicles,
none of this onus can or should be shifted to owners by a piddly recall and who cares if nobody
responds. The US EPA have basically told VW to get this done or the fines get heavier..

It's all up to VW to make it worthwhile to an owner to engage in a repair program...
and to my mind, the best way to do that is offer cash or a killer deal on an upgrade to an en vehicle.

When the original story first broke, I worked out from the EPA's figures on pollution that about 11,000 Americans were being killed per annum by the extra pollution emitted above standard. Long before the news broke I'd noticed that if I followed behind a new Audi or VW diesel I had to hang back further than normal because the smell was disgusting.

You may recall that Audi used to run those "Green Police" adverts promoting their Diesels as being "Uber Clean". Obviously following the "big lie" philosophy still, having learned nothing from WW2.

All of this is because VW tried to save roughly $300 per car by using a NOX trap and cycling the engine lean rich
to catalyze the Nox instead of using Urea injection to break up the NOX.

It was crazy because they knew the NOX trap couldn't operate full time without failing prematurely
as well as the system not giving as good as possible real world fuel economy as just switching it off
and letting the engine run continually lean... Senior staff knew and instructed engineers to proceed but
not to get caught.....No wonder VW was shredding records like crazy.

Other than Bob Brown, I do not know a single person who buys a car based on emissions. People buy cars because the drive well, are well made, look good etc (but then why do Toyotas sell so well?)

My Jetta drives well, is well built, goes like stink, and looks ok for an old car - what comes out of the exhaust is the last thing on my mind, and many other VW buyers minds as well.

VW beat Toyota last year as well - they are the worlds number one car manufacturer by sales...
