Interesting you say that. Depends who you asked! I know a few guys from different areas who were around in those days, who all raised concerns over the aesthetics of the AU before launch. It was the marketers/designers saying that the design researched well, and that they're trying to target males and females in the market, etc etc.
I wonder how many of those people actually believed it, for Series 1 anyway... At least they tidied it up as much as they could by Series 3!
Also, I share your thoughts on FG rear bumper. Same bloody same! XT had a flat, boring setup, while G-Series and XR had the same shapes, just painted/not painted in different configurations! I hope they at least looked at keeping the inner rectangles black while putting body colour on the thin parts. But, I imagine it would have been discarded due to cost of the masking process, and the quality/process control surrounding that...
And as John eluded to, I am mighty partial to my FG MkI's...So much so, I even bought one!
The Comments on the FGII are interesting. I personally love the non XR models. They stand out and in the G6ET model they have to be the best looking model Ford has got.
The XR range creates mixture for me as some days I see em and like it and other days not so much (I still have the feelings with the AU excluding a T3 were I need a box of tissues). I would still buy one but it would need to be in the right colour.
FG shape brought me back to admiring Falcon - appreciate the curves though rear qrtr and back needs a little more work imo but you can't have everything.
XR models were sacrificed to save $$$ since bseries - plain janes they are compared to the AU days you can't pick whats coming towards you but you could with the AUXR.
Therefore I agree G6ET is the pick of the current Falcon bunch hands down - I'm not a base model type so I never like them but they sure look better than AUS1 Forte LOL......

Back then all most people, which included myself, did not have the inside word on upcoming developments. All we relied on was the official comments made on the various publications, and from memory they had me, at least, on the edge of the seat, and luckily I was sitting down.

Now theres the GTE - just needs the staggered rspec wheels not in red and she'd looked near on balanced.
Like the the fish mouth has been reduced - nice that the scalping is in the skirt.
Done well mate - so from screen back is current FG barring the mods at the front ?
