Gal, I take my hat off to you for committing to getting and staying fit. While I suck at running long distances personally, I committed years ago to regular gym work. So much so I built my own gym as part of-of our house when we built it 8 years ago. I am pretty much in there most days doing an average of 45-1.5 hrs a day, either first thing at 5.30 am or in the evenings after work.

I watched both my parents suffer and eventually succumb to health-related issues at a relatively young age. I decided in my 30's that I ddint want go down the same path and have progressively made changes since to my fitness and mental health. I have also changed my diet to be prodominately plant based and it has liternally been one of the best things I have done. Not just for myself, but for envionmental and animal welfare reasons. The plant based intake from a body shape perspective has helped to lean out in the usual trouble areas for men, while also stacking on more muscle and building strength.

Similar to me Col, while i've always been active and played Sport i've watched my Mum and Sister struggle with their weight and associated health issues for nearly 30 years.

Mum currently in a bad way.

It motivates me to keep up my passion for health and fitness, i try to train every day, have done so all my life,.

It's not something i need to think about anymore its my lifestyle.

Its funny you say that as I have had a complete over haul in the way I look at food/nurtition, I was never a good eater in my pre teen and teen days, even in my early twenties I was not a good eater, I hardly ate, my meals consisted mainly of toast and milk and chocolate.

Then in my thirties I discovered food and ate almost anything that was put in front of me, to the point where I was focused on building size and strength, it worked and I was over the 100kg mark and lifting very good in the basic lift's, but I lost sight of what it was actually doing to me, sure you look huge and intimidating but what it was doing and going to do to me in the long haul, did not sit well with me.

Fast forward to now and I can honestly say that I am a much more focused and happy person by loosing the weight, I feel more alive and energetic that if I miss a run or such I feel like I've missed a meal, it makes you strive to just get out and do anything, whether that be running/skipping/swimming or even just walking or being active like cleaning around the house.

I also had/have some personal issues that I am still dealing with that have had a huge impact on my life, ( not for the better) but right now I am only here and focused for my two boys, nothing else concerns me as much these days, oh apart from this damn cholesterol, lol, which I will concur.

But my meals these days are predominately plant based as well, I do have the odd red/white meat but I have limited it hugely, salads are what form my teas mostly, fruit/nuts and yogurt, and milk for breakie and lunch is either eggs/chicken or chicken and avocado, water for my drinks and that is pretty much it.

I have experienced some pains now and then that gets me thinking, oh o, nothing to point of going to emergency but I think, wtf.
Sorry, don't wanna freak you out, docs suggested I over did it back at work. I was only back for 2.5 days haha. Did no lifting at all, just fork work.
Seriously thinking my body is telling me it's had enough of being a forky.

The stranding confused me too, but the doc wasn't much help, she was basically just relaying info from the surgeon who was checking my test results.
My post op check isn't until the end of February so I guess il find out then.

All this health/diet/fitness talk makes me think we need a dedicated thread, I reckon there's plenty of good info hiding in here.

You guys doing a predominantly plant based diet, how did you get onto that? Just decided one day to go that way or something else? I'm a meat lover, always have been but I know it's not doing me any favours.

Personally, I just decided to have a change, things as they were were not working, changing diet or making huge lifestyle changes is like anything in life, you have to want to make the change and stick with it, it's no different to quitting smoking, you have to have the will and desire to do it, making the change in diet in order to loose weight or just be healthy is no different.

The first few week's/months were hard as you still deep down desire and crave certain high calorie foods but after a while of being strict on yourself it becomes some what very easy to say no and have the will power, even so that you can treat yourself every now and then and feel good about it still without it affecting anything weight gain etc.

Just be smart and believe in yourself that you can do it, once you reach a certain goal, strive to go that little bit further, I wanted to get under 100kg, once I got that I then took it in increments of 5kg, to as of this morning I am now sitting at 73 kg, I had a chicken salad for tea last night with water.
It get's very hard at nights for me as I don't get full enough after tea and crave foods around 9pm, you just have to push through it, or have healthier options like a small piece of fruit or yogurt until you can be strong enough to have nothing.

But I'm off to get my bloods done this morning actually, so cholesterol ......here I come!!!.

While I did like the taste of meat and dairy over a long period of time reading research material into their nutritional benefits (other than the propaganda those industries spin) and looking further into farming practices both here and overseas, it became quite apparent to me that these foods are inherently not good for us in most forms that we consume it. They are also linked to wide range of serious health, animal abuse (don’t get me started on this topic) and environmental issues, and could be avoided with much smarter choices.

In my case I did my shift to primariliy plant based consumption gradually as I had to learn about the available types of foods and what foods would meet my specific health requirements. I was never a huge meat consumer, however as a family we committed to reducing our meat consumption to three times a week, then two and so on. In my case also stopped drinking milk in my coffee and then evenly stopped consuming most dairy all together.

Going plant based is really opened up my eyes to all the various options available these days. My meals taste amazing and I found myself trying combinations of vegetables, nuts, grains, legumes and milk replacements that I didn’t even know existed. My variety of food options have now exploded, whereas before I was conditioned into a habit of eating the same old salads, dairy foods and vegetables with meat etc. I initially started eating meat replacements, some tasting great while others not. However, given most of these are still highly processed foods this is down to an ‘occasional’ food type that I consume.

I don’t refer to myself as vegan, just someone that eats primarily a plant based diet. If someone offers me a piece of cake made with eggs, milk and butter will consume it, but I wouldn’t go buy that cake or the ingredients myself. Do I miss meat? Put it this way. Its consumption is habit forming addiction and mindset you have to break out of, no different to smoking, or sugar I guess. My father-inlaw was a cattle farmer and my mother-in-law's family raced horses and owned a butcher shop. What helps me the most is I no longer see meat as food, as therefore I do not crave for or desire it. What I see is mutilated body parts of what was once a sentient being that has been subjected to horrors I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.

Sorry, I don’t mean to be dramatic, but that is what it is. I hold myself accountable for any hurt that my actions may cause others. This accountability is what helps to motivate me to exercise the discipline needed make wiser choices and take control of my life.

Can you please elaborate a little more on the Milk alternatives please Col, I would like to know more on the product's or your personal preferences ?

As I was a big consumer of Milk way back from my youth, when all my siblings would drink coke/sugary drinks , I would consume Milk and by the bottle load.

These day's I buy organic (certified) or close to and I don't consume as much as I used to, probably 1 Ltr a day ?.

But I'm always up to hear about alternatives, albeit it will be very hard for me to give up my taste for Milk.

ok wow Gal, that's a fair amount of daily milk consumption! I suspect that in itself would make a significant different to your body fat and general health longer term if you could substitute a good portion for an alternative.

I have tried a quite a few different things including buying (and making my own) Oat milk, Almond Milk, Coconut and Hazelnut milk. Below are my recommendations that are all available in places like Woolies, except the MILKLAB Almond milk which is probably the closest in texture and taste to cow’s milk and you can buy it online.

I have also added a Coconut yoghurt you can try which is one of my favorites if you like your yoghurt. You will note I have not mentioned any soy based options which are also readily available. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of them.

    Vitasoy Almond Milk Unsweetened 1l

    Nutty Bruce Hazelnut milk

    MILKLAB Almond Barista Milk 1L

    Vitasoy Oat Milk 1l

    Cocobella Coconut Yoghurt Natural 500g

Despite what the dairy industry like to tell us, milk from cows is not good for us (or them), its intended for baby cows not humans. For us, many scientific studies performed over the past 20+ years have shown cow’s milk to be linked to increasing your chances of things like type 1 diabetes, acne, allergies and prostate cancer.

The problem is the dairy protein which increases cholesterol levels and high levels of saturated fats. To put this into perspective a single serving of whole full cream milk typically contains over 20% of the recommended daily allowance of saturated fat. If you’re consuming three glasses of milk per day for example, you’re already consumed a large portion of your average daily allowance even before eating any food. Something to think about mate.

    Thanks Col,

We actually have been down the path with some of those products you have mentioned with concerns with my eldest Son, we had him on a elimination process of certain dairy/Milk products.

I think I may need to have a re think and do this elimination process on myself.

When I say I drink Milk I should have clarified that I don't have full fat, I have light but I do get where you are coming from.

If any of those products you mentioned have a similar taste to light Milk then I will be happy enough to swap over, it's just finding a balance.
