The idea is great. However, like with all EV's at the moment the infrastructure in Australia does not allow for them to be practical except for those in the city. The torque of electric would be a great asset. It would be interesting to see the charging times and also towing etc for such a vehicle. I don't know the ins and outs of that part of EV's and so would love others experience and comments.

Wake me up when an EV takes 5 minutes to charge, with a range of 1,000 KMs. Until then, I’ll keep buying Diesels.
I also like my cars to look like a car, and not the interior of the Spaceship Enterpeise.

I think we also need to clearly distinguish between EV's and HV's (Hybrids).
Hybrid uptake will be far more palatable than full EV's.
But yes, until you can full charge a car in 5-10 mins, get 5-600k's of normal use and have ready access to charge points its all a dream...
The other elephant in the room people havent considered is what will the Govt do to recoup the billions of dollars lost in fuel excises and taxes....
The $5 recharge might climb to $60 once the Govt recoup their share.

For reference, based on official ACCC documents a $60 tank of fuel is made up of:
$30 to the Fuel company
$23 in direct taxes and duties to the Govt.
$7 in operational costs.
So at some point the cost to recharge your car will incur an extra $30 per average refill on top of the power cost....

The other thing we are forgetting is how fragile our electricity grid is. Do we really think that we can run a massive fleet of electric cars without massive wholesale investment in power generation? If you think Adelaide in 2017 was just a blip, electric cars will make the blackouts in London during the blitz look like Disneyland...

Something like 80-85% of the population resides in large cities.
That’s a huge market of people where even current ev tech would be absolutely fine.
I personally would love an ev, one of the new jags would be my pick at the moment. However I wouldn’t do it with out also investing in a quality solar battery set up.
My commute consists of a roughly 18km trip each way, mostly motorway.
Working on that, an I pace would easily do a week of commuting on a single charge, then I could top up the charge on Friday night ready for the weekend jaunt.
Obviously they’re not a solution for every car buyer out there, there’s no one style of car that does suit everyone. Thankfully.
Interesting times ahead though.
Oh, as for the govts missing revenue, it would be very easy to implement the nz system of road user charges nz applies to diesel powered vehicles.

Here is a map of where you can charge your EV as of today. Most of the shopping centres etc are still free to use. The Westfield folk think its worth the few $$ to get you into there shopping centres.

The problem with society today, is that nobody drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.

VERY early days but here is Chady, 4 bays, looks like Tesla only, and some mixed feedback ranging from bays always full, to people not checking in (so you dont go there and wast time) to bays not working:
