In this case the pitting didn't cost track positions. Go in p2 come out p2 so that then makes such a determination to the detriment caused by others electing to stay out then go get tyres then come through from the back.
The stronger position was to always do nothing.
At the discretion to not allow lapped cars through.
The we get to hear Redbull.moan about how lapped cars weren't let through. I assume we all heard Christian to Micheal and then Max to his engineer on what they thought about that.
Martin covered that off brilliantly in the telecast.
Pick your poison. If you want cars unlapped all cars get unlapped and time expires or they stay and you pass them.
What happened is a choice no one knew existed.
It was hugely damaging to Lewis but let's also be fair here.
How many times have safety cars provided the destruction of a race strategy making that person a sitting duck.
Fresh rubber is what cost Lewis the title. The specifics with lapped cars is here in this instance but not always a factor. You are hurt by leading when a safety car comes out.
This come back to perhaps a virtual use where gaps worked for are maintained.
History is a statement, the future is a question.

There will always be in adversity we "should have" coming into this kind of fast and furious time in any sport.
MB didn't pit Pratt due to the good lead and rightfully so but circumstances can change in a millisecond as we all know.
The article above makes some good points on the airtcle #'s and in the end quotes all teams know and agreed that the pref is to finish races on the green.
It just didn't suit MB full stop - they had the advantage till the safety car got called out, it was in the bag 11sec lead.
They have tried to push the ruling boundaries at the time, Toto even telling Masi thats not right showed he'd stop at nothing.
The Entitled ones can't take it after all the years of dominance, finally a fight and they've lost.
Love it great for the sport.

I think most are in agreement the race should have ended under Green.
I think the debate is if those 5 cars should have been allowed to pass.
The merc argument would be that while Max had to fight to get by Lewis was making it harder to catch him let alone pass him where as the RB argument will be Max would have passed those cars and xaught and passed Lewis regardless.
It would have been nice to see that tested. It removed the possii ility of a mistake by Max but I think its highly likely those cars would have yielded quickly so as a battle could take place.
Which brings us back to the inequity for leaders and safety cars.
If Lewis pits straight away he comes out in 2nd because Rb would have then gone track position.
I think lewis wins then.
The follower will always do the opposite of the leader.
Anything could have gone wrong in the pits. Its not without risk but in those circumstances you make the running and roll the dice.
I think Lewis was robbed here not completely sold that entirely on masi because its a shit situation.
If I were asked about this type of event and if with a lap to go it was fair to release the lapped cars that were in the way of a podium fight, if there was no other clarifications and contexts I would have said I'm ok with it.
If this happens race 1 I think most people would probably be ok with it. Should it decide a title ideally no and thats got to be hard to accept when you have this amount of time money and effort on the line.
I thought Lewis handled it very well too

Well for the last 10 or so years safety cars have been determining races, F1, supercars , etc. It's going to continue, like it or not. Also if you notice, Red Bull, both in F1 and supercars, work the late race safety car better than most..
Most sponsers, supporters, fans, and the catogary all crave for the closest of finishes, well it happened this year.
Some will feel robbed, others will see it as rightful justication. Me personally, I still feel robbed in 2017 for how the supercars championship ended. Based on our alliances, we will all have our own opinions.
How do you fix this? I don't know if you can, as there are so many potential scenarios.
Now I certainly agree with Ian, Lewis was probably the most gracious I have ever seen him, and for a nano second I respected him

Lewis had no choice to be stoic he benefited from a last lap pass in 2008 to overhaul Massa who was World Campion for about 30 seconds. Massa acted with grace at that moment, Lewis was on a hiding to nowhere if he did not carry himself the same way.
I can't help but draw comparisons between Supercars in 2017 and this end to 2021. In one example you have a team let down by the rulebook and its application accepting the referees decision and looking to work with the sport to improve processes. In the other you have a team fanning the flames.
A championships a long journey, this one had many twists and turns. Both sides probably had the opportunity to put it beyond doubt well before the last race but each made their own mistakes along the way. That's the only way luck and a safety car ended up playing a determining role. It could have been one of a number if things. It was always going be a who dares wins kind of outcome.
Mercedes got gun shy. Any other race and the calls they made under the virtual and actual safety cars are probably different and it played into the hands of the team who played their natural aggressive game.
OK. You must read my posts differently to how I write (or intended to write them ). No panicking here.
But the rules say well read it for yourself.
They race director can elect to let lapped cars pass or not. The ‘some’ lapped cars doesn’t seem to be an option.
It will come down to the courts interpretation of the “any” but in context that Any means all.
Then there is the requirement to complete one lap before releasing the field. Regardless of if they some or all of the lapped cars pass. This was not followed. And is the basis for Mercedes appeal.
Had this happened earlier in the race or at any other race this year it wouldn’t matter. But last lap of the last race with the championship on the line.
I’m glad I don’t have to decide.

This radio chat from Carlos Sainz finishing P3 and P5 in the championship behind Merc x 2 and Red Bull x 2. Effectively best of the rest. Such joy.
Hopefully, in 2022 we see Carlos on the top step of the podium more often. Vamos!
