i got a pay rise last year and before that it was jan 2007. neither of them substantial ($1/hr of less). the company is a multi million dollar company but i don't begrudge the owner one bit. he made the company what it is today so i have no problem with him living the good life. i know plenty of people who don't get yearly wage reviews, but there seems to be a mentality now that you are entitled to more money at regular intervals and if it doesn't happen you have to make a song and dance about it. maybe some people should just adjust their lifestyles so that they live within their means.

What if a guy/girl is working a minimum wage job? How should they adjust their "lifestyle" to live within their means? A 4.5 percent inflation hike a year without a corresponding pay review will be tough.. It's just not that black & white mate..

That's exactly why the Industry is asking for Support. They don't want to cut jobs if they can help it, for a manufacturer like Holden its not good for Business to have that plastered on the news. And its agreements like this that push up the minimum wage for unskilled workers.
And not all the managers were born with silver spoons in their mouths, some of them worked pretty bloody hard to get where they are.

Wouldn't surprise me if The Australian carries this story on a bit more as its kind of the flavour of the month.

Mate I agree most managers work very bloody hard to get where they are. My problem with this whole thread/scenario is the premise that the top end of town can whinge/bleat that there is no money to pay workers, but then turn around & give themselves obscene pay rises. It's a touch hard to swallow anything that comes out of corporate Australia when this kind of hypocrisy is rife..

HOLDEN has struck a new wage deal guaranteeing most of its 4000 workers a pay rise of at least 18.3 per cent by 2014.

The Australian reports there is potential for this to rise up to 22.3 per cent more by the end of the agreement, hailed by the automotive union as "the best deal yet to be negotiated" in the industry.
The report says all workers will earn the equivalent of eight percent more in wages and bonuses in the first year, and a "hardship recognition payment" of $1750 (and $1000 in successive years).

This was to recognise their sacrifices during the global financial crisis, when shifts were scaled back.

The move follows the company's announcement earlier this month that it would cut about 100 casual and part-time jobs from the assembly line at its Elizabeth plant.

Premier Jay Weatherill recently met Holden bosses during a visit to General Motors in Detroit to discuss the company's future at Elizabeth after 2016.

The state and federal governments are considering an assistance package put forward by the company and there is speculation it could cost taxpayers up to $200 million to secure Holden's long-term future in Australia.
not sure how accurate the article is. apparently holden and the employees are yet to sign off on the deal. the full story is at 'the australian' but you have to join to be able to read it in full. on the surface, it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

Interesting tactic from a company barely breaking even.. Not sure how to read it. Where's the money for the wage rises coming from? or will there be redundancies to follow that will be offset by productivity increases? Net result is total wage bill stays roughly the same.
