New Ford Transit previewed by Tourneo Custom Concept

The Ford Tourneo Custom Concept will preview the new Ford Transit van range when it debuts at next month’s Geneva motor show.

Developed for the European and Asian markets (but not North America), the Tourneo passenger range will launch this year, with the related Transit commercial range will follow before the beginning of 2013.

The Tourneo Custom Concept adopts the brand’s Kinetic design language, with broad headlights, trapezoidal grille, prominent wheel arches and modern interior giving the van a much-needed injection of personality and style.

Ford says its designers worked hard to create an interior space that contains both a driver-focused cockpit and a luxurious cabin with the ambience and quality materials of a sedan.

The Tourneo Custom Concept features a suite of technology systems, many of which are only offered on high-end passenger vehicles. Among those is Ford’s Sync in-car connectivity system for phones and media devices, which includes an integrated emergency assistance function. The extensive safety package also includes front, side and curtain airbags, rear-view camera, lane departure warning and a tired-driver alert system.

The concept is powered by a 114kW 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine. The engine will also be available in 74kW and 92kW tunes across the Tourneo and Transit ranges, and will be equipped standard with stop-start technology as Ford targets class-leading fuel economy.

Ford says the Tourneo Custom Concept is based on a new Ford global platform that has been engineered to deliver “car-like dynamics [with] agile, responsive handling, enhanced ride comfort and reduced noise levels”.

Ford has produced the Transit-based Tourneo people mover since the 1990s. The current Tourneo – based on the Mk6 Transit – is sold in Europe and Asia, including the right-hand-drive UK market.

Squared off back is great for cargo space, corporate Ford front works on this design too. Quite successfully. The interior looks first rate and the style line down the side works pretty well too. Ford have yet another potential winner on their hands. Wonder if the Tourneo people mover version will also make it's way to Australia?!

I can't see a reason why they couldn't, especially if it's made in Asia.

I saw one today in Smithfield - makes a joke of the competition. Too classy for a work vehicle.

Would be good for the taxi industry. The Hiace Vans are junk!

The new transit is a great machine, let down by SWB at this point.

The new Transit is awesome to drive. Loaded with tools and ladders in side I managed 8.3 l/100 on the last trip.

It gets lots of looks as well. Quite a few have asked what it is as they are expecting a Transit to look like the old ones.

Hey that looks good! For a van. Makes the rest of them look pox.

Where's Damo? He's our resident van man...

It would look nicer if it was colour coded on the bumpers as per the top Van pics. But hey, at the end of the day its a work car!

All though, I have thought about alloy wheels for it!

Right here, the new Transit looks really nice and this concept car is pretty cool, luxury van though the ass end of it looks a bit suspect, not a fan of the tail lights. I'd be interested in seeing the big Transits when they come later this year, unfortunately I won't have the chance to pull them apart anymore.

This concept reminds me of the Nissan Elgrand, those are some pretty pimped out vans from factory:

Some have all leather interior with captains chairs, DVD player etc.

What is the build quality like on the new Transit? The previous model was terrible and a real bitch to add in aftermarket stuff to but they had a bangin' stereo and they haulled ass compared to the 4 cyl competition, maybe because they were all manual and the competition auto? I drove a Transit prison van and even with the cells in the back it still went pretty well compared to the turd VW Transporters I was helping turn into divy vans for VicPol.

The only problem is I reckon they should have the 3.2L as an option, I believe the UK Transit has had the 3.2L for a while where as we only got the 2.2L 4 cylinder models unfortunately.

Mercedes Vito has the 3L V6 diesel in top spec and they haul ass, same engine as the Sprinter but in the much smaller and lighter Vito.
