    Oil advice

G'day guys. Just need some feedback and advice. Will be servicing the EB XR8 next week. Full oil change for motor, trans, and diff. Now the car hasn't been run decently for over 2 years. I was going to change the oils but wanted to know whether to use an oil flush then new oil? Or do I change the oils, run the car regularly for a week, then change the oils again so that all the crap has been flushed out? This car is a keeper so want to do the right thing first time.

When you say hasn't been run decently .... what's the "sitting time" actually been? If it has been run even once a month for 15 mins only you need not be too concerned about contaminants. Just do normal oil changes throughout.

However if it has sat totally idle for 6 months or longer then disconnect the coil, crank it over for a full 60 secs, then connect up and fire it up. After doing a 20km drive you can then change all your oils as normal - the contaminants will be emptied along with the old oils and no need for doing a flush or two back-to-back changes. You really only need to go to those lengths with a motor that has been totally idle for over 3 years. Of course that depends also to a degree on your local environment - if you live at Bondi then naturally there's more chance of corrosive activity inside a locked down engine that hasn't been turned over at all for years.

No prize for guessing what car they were referring to ... OWN THE ROAD ...

Thanks mate for the feedback. The problem that I have is that I am unsure of how often it has been run. According to the past owner it was "every now and then" just to see if it started. I just want to do it right the first time and make sure it lasts the distance.
