    302 Windsor rebuild

G'day, I have a 302 from a 1992 F100, i would like to rebuild it and put it into my XT falcon wagon, I will not be running the fuel injection though. Can anyone tell me if these blocks are the same as a standard earlier model Windsor? Also I have been told they have smaller big end bolts and head bolts, are these engines still suitable to use if I was going to look for some serious horsepower mods?

Welcome Aussie, in a word no, these blocks are not as strong as early Windsor blocks, personally I wouldn't chase more than 400hp/6000rpm with these late model blocks, either get yourself an early block or an aftermarket block.

I hate to be the fun police but you may also want to get in touch with your local department of transport.

If I remember right when swapping engines in an old car with a motor from a newer car you have to retain all the emission control equipment of the newer engine. So in plain terms you would have a 60's model car that had no emission control equipment now having to comply with the emission standards of 1992.

Which seems completely illogical for force the car to comply with emissions regs it never had to when it was manufactured, it should be the other way around.

Thats why I said to check with transport but my memory is when transplanting engines you have to comply with the most recent emission regs of the car or engine. This was a long time ago so my memory may be rusty but when I was looking for a V8 for my '69 HK Premier I was considering putting a 5L out of a VN (1992) but I was informed I would have to run all the emission gear. I ended up going a 350 chev as I would not have emission gear applicable to that engine. Inversely you can not run a pre emissions big block in your late model car easily as you have to apply the emission standards of the car not the engine.

I will say it again though, I may be wrong and I would be happy for someone to demonstrate that dementia has set in early.

Ok thanks, I'm pretty sure your right about the emissions but if I am going to have club rego sorted before I do the swap so am happy to run the risk after that.

Ok thanks, do you know if all early block after market parts will still fit the later version?

They should yes, the bolt patterns are the same.

What sort of gear are you fitting and what is the goal power figure?

Haven't started yet but I'm thinking 300 to 350 horsepower would be around the mark. I'm really just wanting to build a good strong engine but realistically it will only be used for cruising
