Thread: Uninspired by FGX

    Uninspired by FGX

From what I see, FGX conforms to One Ford's styling way more than I had anticipated, and the traditional Falcon signature - that has had links all the way back to XD - has been all but eradicated.

The irony is it's been designed to fit in with the global look but is culled because there's no place for it globally.

Due to this I see it as the most un-Falcon-like Falcon ever made.

Then there was the hype - "BEST LOOKING FALCON EVER", we were told. Granted, I wouldn't expect anyone from Ford to say anything less, but to me that is totally untrue and only adds to the disappointment.

As ive said, its looks are polarizing.

My view is its a transitional model to condition us to the new Ford global DNA, Ford really had no choice but to go down this path with the future in mind.

FG2 is without question the looker of the FG family.

I am a big fan of FGX. It is a very corporate looking car but also restrained. My only feedback is that there needed to be some more differentiation between models. It DRL treatment of the lights is a nice touch but I would have liked to see a difference in the shape like all XR's did have. As mentioned a bit more height on the bonnet scoop would have been nice as well. In the scheme of things these are really nit picking things. This is the pick of the FG's for me.

I wasn't convinced until I saw it in person. However, I do feel that it is a little feminine from some angles, and doesn't have enough mongrel. Performance-wise, it will, but it would be interesting to see a bigger bodykit (ala an FPV special). But I'll take it for the performance bargain it is.

Falcons have always used the Ford global styling language to some degree. And picked up cues from other marques. To me it is unmistakably a Falcon but the grille does throw off the "family resemblance" quite a bit.

    Not totally correct, Dave.

Yes that was the intent but let me describe how unintelligent, foolish and obtuse that is. (Not aimed at you but at Ford)
If there were stronger expressions of stupidity I'd have used them.

Transition for what? There's already fish mouth grilles on Focus and Fiesta. When the other fish mouth products arrive people will know they're Ford products. People are already conditioned. It's not like they're transitioning from an all-Falcon company to a pallet and variety of new products. Nothing's "new" is coming except for that coupe.

Global DNA had already existed in the current crop, and even in FG, but there was a good dose of "Falcon" signature in FG. This final effort is more than disappointing, because they've just cut and pasted the global DNA without any thought for Falcon DNA. Too unoriginal but they've passed it off as the best looking Falcon ever. This pisses me off more than Falcon dying.

To add insult to injury it looks worse than Mondeo, or "not as good". Half empty or half full but with me at the moment it's the former. There's no synergy with fish mouth and FG, it doesn't appear to have worked like it "has" with Mondeo because that was a clean sheet design.

They should have retained what they've had going for decades and let it die with some dignity. Instead, every time I will see one I'll be reminded (by it's global mask) what brought it too it's end.

I've seen all the pics and the cars in the flesh many times.

Looks are subjective so there is not right or wrong (Bangle inspired BMWs aside. They were just wrong). But in my opinion the base/XR cars are just a bit plain at the front, whereas the G6E is just gorgeous. I like the rear upgrade treatment with the chrome flash which again works best on the G6E, because it ties in with front.

If I was ordering an FGX, which at this stage I'm not. It would be an XR8 in Vanish or Shiloette with the front grille and chrome work off the G6E.

For me the best looking FG was the series 1 G6E. The Astonesque front was a winner. That said the FPV's were better still.
The problem with society today, is that nobody drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.

Yes it does look like 2 destinctively different design languages grafted at the A pillar.

FGX335 mentions feminine. I see that a lot in FG.

Yes, now we're (almost) on the same page.

This exact "grafting" happened with AU to BA. There was the rugged, squared-off masculine cues that BA brought, but in the middle of it there was the unmistakable AU glass-house. They squared the tops of the windscreen and rear glass to lessen dome effect and they almost pulled it off. To me this takes away from the BA's intent. EF was done well although it did start off with better hard points than what BA did.

The reason why I said "almost" is the other problem it has it's gone backwards due to loss off Falcon dna, unlike BA, EF and XF.

I don't know if its the best Falcon ever. Personally I don't think so but I do think it will one of the best. Like all these things we have all had time to get used to the passed models. I remember many not liking the bonnet bulge originally or the duel headlamps of the ED/EF XR's. Over time we got to appreciate them for what they are. This one, the FG-X has been here 5 minutes. Sure, its not perfect but its certainly one of the more aggressive looking Falcon's and the G6E is the most handsome I think. Personally I think still think it does look very Falcon, but maybe I'm biased.
