    coolant time.

    Ok guy’s, I have done a little bit of research of late about coolant, as my XW radiator has a leak that I need to get fixed and in the process I am going to flush and change the coolant, Now I have been reading about Nulon and on their website how they state the following for vehicles pre 1984,

    NOT suitable where anti-freeze/anti-boil coolant is specified. Use Nulon Long Life Concentrated Coolant (LL) for anti-freeze/anti-boil protection.

    Nulon Ultra Cool (R45) contains corrosion inhibitors and is designed to provide maximum heat transfer in cooling systems where anti-freeze/anti-boil (glycol) is not specified. Heat transfer in the cooling system is done predominantly by water which has an excellent heat transfer coefficient. Glycol has the ability to extend the operating temperature range of a coolant, however it has a higher heat transfer coefficient than that of water. This is the main reason why non-glycol based coolants transfer heat much more efficiently than glycol based coolants.

    In motor sport applications, Nulon Ultra Cool (R45) is a suitable alternate to glycol based coolant. Glycol is very slippery and is difficult to remove from the race track surfaces, which poses risks to other drivers on the track.

    The use of tap water is not recommended for automotive cooling systems. Chlorine is usually added to tap water in order to kill bacteria and make it safe for drinking. However chlorine is found to be corrosive in cooling systems. Tap water also contains minerals that can cause scaling when used in a cooling system. Use suitable demineralised water for use with R45.

    Where a vehicle manufacturer particularly specifies the use of anti-freeze/anti-boil coolant with glycol it is essential to use it as some engines suffer from localised "hot spot" boiling and require a glycol coolant.

    So what have people used in their older Falcons, I always thought to use a Glycol based product but after reading the above it is not preferred for older vehicles,

    I have used Tectaloy Gold in the past but this time round I think I might try the Nulon R45 for my XW and then something with a Glycol based for the AU.

    Also do I have to use a Green coolant for the AU ?,

    Have u looked into evens waterless coolant, n flush. The guy from gt restoration use to endorse it for the cars he fix, ive got some info i u like i can post it, supposedly has higher boiling point so in those really hot parts in the heads it wont boil. I'm looking at putting it in my ef but just haven't got around to it.

    Exceeding the limitations of water
    Water is an excellent fluid for cooling whilst in a liquid state, but when water turns to steam it has virtually no capacity for heat transfer. Evans is a superior fluid for transferring heat in engines because it remains in a liquid state until above 190°C. This article details the benefits of a significantly higher boiling point.

    Hot Spots
    Within an engine cooling system the hottest surfaces are those adjacent to the combustion chamber, specifically the cylinder liners and cylinder head. In these hot spots water is likely to vaporise preventing efficient cooling and causing loss of performance and unnecessary engine damage (see physical limitations of water). When the coolant fails in this way the engine becomes even hotter causing more hot spots and more steam.
    Evans waterless coolants will not boil around these engine hotspots maintaining efficient cooling performance even when the engine is put under extreme conditions. When water turns to steam it pressurises the cooling system putting strain on hoses and other components. The significantly higher boiling point of Evans coolants means 75% less pressure than water resulting in a less stressed cooling system.
    Water contains oxygen which causes corrosion and also allows electrolytic activity which further damages engine metals (see chemical limitations of water). Evans waterless coolants eliminate corrosion and electrolytic activity significantly increasing the life of the engine

    For your "AU" yes, do not use the "Red/Orange" Coolant.
    Had them all(well nearly), Diahatsu "360x" "Kei Class" micro car,Twin cam Escort,V6 Capri, XT 302 Fairmont sedan,XA Wagon, XB GS 250 Panel Van, XC falcon 500 "update",AU Futura , BA Wagon, BF MK1 RTV Egas , XR6 Ecolpi ute, G6E Ecoboost("current two")( and a few Holdens(HQ Sandman 253 among them.(In the iconic "Chrome Yellow".) + other assorted stuff.)
