Question XL Falcon generator to alternator conversion.

The mounting bracket on my generator has snapped and I am thinking it is time to convert to an alternator. Anyone know of availability of kits for this. Thanks.

I dont know of a kit, no. That's not to say they don't exist, but it should be reasonably straight forward to convert it to a later model setup using the brackets and bolts for an XW-onwards. It's the same engine block externally (assuming its the 6 pot you're talking about). A Bosch alternator with an inbuilt regulator will cut out a fair bit of engine bay wiring and make things much simpler.

If you can get the bracket to suit from a later Falcon, BXF1238A is the Bosch part number for their 80A alternator with the old school Ford housing.

Upgrade power wire from alternator to battery with an 8BS red cable, may want to chuck 120A fuse in there too. 16-8 battery lugs to suit.

Chuck a 2BS earth lead from battery negative to body and another from battery negative to engine earth. 35-8 battery lugs to suit.

RE60 internal regulator wiring diagram, grab a plug to suit the alternator:

If yours has those crappy old lead battery terminals, grab a set of VT-VZ Commodore battery terminals, good stuff.

All done, I bought a new universal 85 Amp Ford alternator made by Bosch and custom made a bracket. A bit of rewiring was done and I followed peoples advice and replaced all the heavy cables. The regulator is gone and it was pretty simple to join a few wires to get the Battery feed to ignition and the charge light to work. There was one extra wire I had to run from the battery sensor pin on the new alternator to the positive on the battery. The only problem I encountered was the new bracket comes close to the cooling fins on the new alternator pulley. This did limit the adjustment of the fan belt and I had to go a bit bigger with the belt to keep the clearance. 14.2 Volts now charging the battery and I think the lights and blinkers etc are a bit more lively too. I did omit to put a fuse in the battery to ignition wire and I will fix this up soon. Also thinking of putting a kill switch in this circuit too. Anyone interested in photos ?
