    S/c rtv

The Ute started life as an ’04 BAII RTV I6. The RTV is handy for power modifications as it has the V8 radiator, the V8 transmission and M86 Diff.

So a few years ago I was doodling round in my mind some options and came up with a Centri S/C, namely a Raptor V. Raptor are located in Mackay up the Coast in Queensland, so location is handy, further, the kit supplied is user friendly. It just requires enough knowledge to know how to change plugs, the fuel regulator and the MAP sensor. Other than that the kit just bolts on, consisting of an adaptor plate, an oversized idler pulley for the belt drive and the total removal of the existing air box. The major difference with the Raptor V is you don’t have to be concerned with oiling as the S/C bearings are ceramic and air-cooled. This saves considerable work at installation.
The Ute was prepared by the addition of a 200cpsi 3 inch -5inch- 3inch cat and a length of 3inch pipe to replace the 2 ½ left in place when an XR8 Ute exhaust had been added previously. This was coupled up to the Pacemaker 4490 extractors installed.
A tune was loaded into my existing X-Cal tuner and the installation went ahead ably assisted by my son, “Misery Gutz’. A couple of hours and the screamer is fired up and idles away successfully. At one stage of the Job Raptor assisted the job by phone, on a Saturday too.
Moving on the Car is off down to Elite Automotive, in Archerfield where the existing injectors are tossed in the parts bin and replaced by a set of 42lb Bosch Racing injectors. Tim works on the tune and in side an hour or two I’m told the jobs done and handed a Dyno Sheet showing 231rwkw. I’d been at Elite before and the Ute had been on there on a dyno day, showing 132rwkw. So I was a happy man.

That night the Ute went to T&T at Willowbank and produced a 14.2 for the 1/4; pretty good against a base of 16.8 when I first got the thing.
After a few months I put a Catch can on the Ute. It was about this time I noticed the Ute was returning slower times, seemed to have lost it’s edge, I found the cat had melted down, the extractors had cracked, so I installed a ballistic 2-5-3 100cpsi cat, got the extractors welded up and found there was no real improvement in operations, seemed to me there was another problem. I replaced the XR8 system with an X-force Exhaust and there was some improvement, not enough though. I mean nothing like it was……
I had been talking to Elite about some of the problem and I’d decided the next course of action was a fuel pump change, when on a cruise on a hot summers day the hose cooling the gearbox on the Raptor split. Disaster, so it was pack up the S/C and mail it of to Raptor for a spruce up. It came back and Raptor advised the internals were filthy and why had I not used a catch can on the installation, as it was the filth would be robbing the system of power…….
So, I had a catch can on and pulled it apart, used stainless steel pot scrubbers as stuffing and found once the Raptor was back on the Ute, the old ‘mojo’ had returned.
All power has returned and I’m very happy with how the unit performs, delivering near 290 4v performance in an I6 with decent fuel economy as well.

Still modding the Ute; currently working on some projects including improved gearbox cooling for the Raptor; Also Raptor is sending me a new hi-flow BOV to try on the system, this means ‘Misery Gutz’ will have to break out the tools and make a new induction pipe to install in the system. I’m also in the planning stages of a W2A intercooler using the skills at PWR. The installation of a 3pod gauge set-up as I have a BA 3 pod unit by Pole Position laying around the place here. I have a lot of parts to convert the fuel door to an eclectic release setup. The list goes on and on…. Mods are never finished.

Brilliant ute mate as always. Saw an XR8 ute running around the other day with the poly bar on it. To tell you the truth I actually liked it! So the wheels are turning and I am considering it for mine. After I get the cams done we will have to organise that cruise.

I like them. I had one on my work RTV. Hit a big roo coming back from Wagga and all it did was crack the grill. Not worried about the purple but would take a black one. They pop up on Ebay every now and then so might just wait till then as I still haven't made up my mind.
