    Au 302 noise concerns

My motor is making an almost rhythmic knocking sound from the left side. I can't really hear it when the engine revs because of my exhaust (inside the car)it's most prominent when I put my head near the left wheel. Could this be detonation from wrong fuel type or something more sinister? It's only just started less than 5kms ago (I just put shell premium in earlier today)

In the area you refer to it is most likely the purge canister solenoid ticking happily away. It is situated in front of the wheel behind the splash shield; mounted to the frame rail. Many people have tried to insulate it when the noise starts but mostly unsuccessfully. You can buy a new one and it may last 5 mins or 5 years. I've (and most people) have just learned to live with it and affectionately call it the Tickford tic.
Australian Muscle Car ... "It is a sensational high performance vehicle; a beautifully engineered and immensely capable four door Grand Tourer or 'GT' in the truest sense of that tradition."

No prize for guessing what car they were referring to ... OWN THE ROAD ...

Ah ok, thanks MisterAU. I just thought it strange as it started out of nowhere. Paranoia I guess.

Yea it was kinda like a knock, almost like a horse cantering on cement (the rhythm) which made me think it might be detonation because it sounded like the firing pattern. It's gone now, I didn't hear it on the way home from work which I'm glad for. It's just rolled over to 180,000. With bonnet up and ears open there aren't any other noises of concern other than a slight leak in the d/s extractor. I'm booking it in for its service soon so I'll ask them have a look and listen.
